Mornington Peninsula Map

Two coasts and a ridge
The peninsula hangs south from Melbourne. On its west side is Port Phillip Bay, calm and lined with towns and bathing boxes. On its east side is Western Port, and at its southern end is Bass Strait, where the surf beaches are.
Down the middle runs high ground: Arthurs Seat above Dromana, and the Red Hill and Main Ridge country behind it, where the cellar doors are. At the western tip, the bay's narrow entrance, the Rip, separates Point Nepean from the Bellarine Peninsula.

Bay side or ocean side
The bay side: Mornington town, Mount Martha, Dromana, Rye and Sorrento. The water is calm, the bathing boxes line the sand, and bus 788 runs along it to Portsea.
The ocean side: the back beaches from Portsea to Flinders, London Bridge and Cape Schanck. These face Bass Strait, with rips and big swells, and no bus reaches most of them.
Western Port: the quieter eastern shore, where Pt. Leo Estate looks across the water to Phillip Island.
Named places, from Melbourne to the tip
Here are the places the tours name, in the order you meet them driving down from the city.
Frankston: where the train from Melbourne ends and bus 788 begins. Beyond it, the freeway runs on down the middle of the peninsula.
Mornington town: a harbour and a main street on the bay. The private day stops here for half an hour on the way down.
Mount Martha and Dromana: bay beaches with rows of bathing boxes. Dromana sits under Arthurs Seat, where the gondola climbs to the 314 m summit.
Red Hill and Main Ridge: the high ground behind the ridge, among the vineyards. The food and wine day from the city has its winery lunch here.
Merricks and Point Leo: the Western Port side. Pt. Leo Estate and its sculpture park look across the water to Phillip Island.
Fingal: the hot springs, at 140 Springs Lane, inland from the ocean beaches. The springs suggest a taxi from Rye if you come by bus.
Cape Schanck: the 1859 lighthouse on the Bass Strait cliffs, with a boardwalk down to the rock platform.
Rye and Sorrento: the last bay towns. The ferry from Queenscliff lands at Sorrento, and the 90-minute cruise leaves from its pier.
Portsea and London Bridge: the ocean arch sits just up from Portsea Surf Beach, with a lookout above it.
Point Nepean: the national park at the tip, with the Quarantine Station and the forts. Bus 788 ends at its gate.
San Remo: not on the peninsula at all. It sits across Western Port, by the bridge to Phillip Island, and the island cruises leave from its jetty.
