Mornington Peninsula Weather

The Mornington Peninsula is mild all year, and rain is what changes your day. Lookouts, boardwalks and beaches are outdoors; the hot springs and the cellar doors are not. Before you book a Mornington day tour, here is what each month brings.

What the weather does to a day on the peninsula

Most of a tour day is outdoors, and the season changes what you get:

• Wind on the water. The 90-minute cruise off Sorrento runs on open water. September has the windiest mornings, so a breeze means a choppier ride.
• Open-air pools in winter. The hot springs open every day of the year. The colder the air, the more welcome the water.
• The whale cruise season. The winter cruise from San Remo, across Western Port on Phillip Island's doorstep, sails the whale migration. Sightings are never promised.
• Strawberries or chocolate. The sightseeing day from Melbourne picks strawberries from November to April, and stops for chocolate from May to October instead.
• Daylight saving. It moves the Point Nepean car gate from 6 pm to 8 pm and the last park shuttle from 4:15 pm to 4:45 pm.

If rain is forecast, move the lookouts and the boardwalk to another day, and keep the springs or a cellar door for the wet one.

April

Days reach about 20 °C and nights 10 °C. About 61 mm of rain falls, on some 8 days. The sun sets at about 6:00 pm on the 15th. Daylight saving ends on the first Sunday, so sunset jumps an hour earlier and the Point Nepean car gate shuts at 6 pm.

May

Days reach about 17 °C and nights 8 °C. About 67 mm of rain falls, on some 11 days. The sun sets at about 5:15 pm on the 15th. The sightseeing day swaps strawberries for a chocolate stop until October. Warm pools suit a cool day.

June

Days reach about 14 °C and nights 7 °C. About 73 mm of rain falls, on some 11 days. The sun sets at about 5:00 pm on the 15th. The shortest days. A day tour from Melbourne drives home after dark.

July

Days reach about 14 °C and nights 6 °C. About 70 mm of rain falls, on some 12 days. The sun sets at about 5:15 pm on the 15th. The coldest nights. The winter whale cruise sails from San Remo, across Western Port, with no sighting promised.

August

Days reach about 15 °C and nights 7 °C. About 72 mm of rain falls, on some 12 days. The sun sets at about 5:45 pm on the 15th. The most rain days of the year. Pack a rain layer for the lookout stops.

September

Days reach about 17 °C and nights 8 °C. About 67 mm of rain falls, on some 11 days. The sun sets at about 6:15 pm on the 15th. The windiest mornings of the year at the station. A breeze makes the cruise off Sorrento choppier.

October

Days reach about 19 °C and nights 9 °C. About 68 mm of rain falls, on some 10 days. The sun sets at about 7:30 pm on the 15th. Daylight saving starts on the first Sunday: the car gate stays open to 8 pm and the last shuttle runs at 4:45 pm.

November

Days reach about 21 °C and nights 11 °C. About 58 mm of rain falls, on some 8 days. The sun sets at about 8:15 pm on the 15th. Strawberry picking returns to the sightseeing day. Rain eases month by month.

December

Days reach about 23 °C and nights 12 °C. About 52 mm of rain falls, on some 7 days. The sun sets at about 8:45 pm on the 15th. Sunset comes at almost its latest. The Bath House costs more at weekends, as all year.

The seasons, and which one you want

If you want the beaches, pick December to March and swim between the flags. If you want the hot springs, pick a cool weekday and arrive early. If you want the wineries, autumn brings still days and the vintage. Our guide to the cellar doors lists which days pour where.

Best time of day

Early morning

Weekday Bath House entry is cheapest if you arrive by 8:30 am: A$60 against A$80 later. The pools are warm whatever the air.

Midday

The best light for the lookouts on the ridge, and the time most day tours are at a cellar door or in the pools.

Late afternoon

The gondola closes at 4 or 5 pm by season. Outside daylight saving, the Point Nepean car gate closes at 6 pm.

Evening

Weekday twilight bathing after 6 pm is A$60. In summer the sun sets after 8:30 pm, so the bay beaches get the last of it.

Your day tour sets its own hours. If you drive, start early: you will reach the springs before the crowds and the lookouts in the clearer morning air.
